Name of First Module Completed: Adult Learner
Summary/Reflection:
A high proportion of student in DCS classes
are adult learners. Therefore adult learning theory since the 1980s, especially
Malcom Knowles’ concept of andragogy and his six assumptions on adult learners,
is relevant and is the focus of most of the module’s video. The article in the
module is on the ‘implications of adult learners for online learning disease’
and argues online courses, used disproportionately by adults, should “be
designed based on the needs of adult learners’ (Cercone p. 137). The author of
the article reviews a number of adult learning theories, including andragogy
and examines how they “may be applies to the design of online learning
environments” (p. 137). The end of the article offers thirteen guidelines for
teaching adult learners and with each guideline a handful of online teaching
practices which are in accordance with those guidelines.

UNO’s student body, as well as interesting trivia important for instructors to
keep in mind when it comes to their youngest students.
