Describe the instructor’s rapport with students

I believe Mike’s style would develop rapport with students. Even though there is distance between Mike and the student since Mike is presenting a podcast and not directly interacting with the student, Mike’s laid back approach is personable. He also did well to build a bridge to the students. For example, I think he did a good job of building rapport when he mentioned that he wished that he had learned about academic reading strategies when he was an undergraduate. That anecdote built a connection to his undergraduate students.

Based on this presentation, what do you consider to be this instructor’s strengths?

Based on the podcast, I would say that Mike’s strengths are first and foremost that he left the impression of being knowledgeable. He was able to this without coming off as pretentious, which is a double win. Mike’s ability to tell stories is a definite strength as well. Effective too is that way that he weaved meta-language into his presentation. Repetitive language and changing voice volume to make his point worked well as well.
Based on this presentation, what do you consider to be this instructor’s weaknesses?

In my opinion the attempts to make impressions of people, specifically using accents was ineffective. It runs too much of a risk of being offensive. In addition, I think the decision to associate himself with the bathroom was not the best decision. I fear that his students might associate him with the bathroom, which has a toilet, a place where you go to evacuate my bowels. I like the willingness to be human, considering a lot of people do read in the bathroom, but I think it probably does my harm than good to build rapport.
